You can help promote the human givens approach today

David CameronDavid Cameron has asked for the nation’s ‘wellbeing’ to be measured for the Government from April 2011, saying that his goal in politics is to “make a better life for people” but starting by “measuring our progress as a country not just by how our economy is growing, but by how our lives are improving, not just by our standard of living, but by our quality of life”. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) will be leading the survey, at an estimated cost of £2m.

If the Coalition’s research is to be more than a gimmick it should incorporate a human givens component at its heart. What was always assumed by governments over the last few decades is that raw data is somehow more important than understanding what data means.

Emotional needs audit and the government’s ‘happiness’ project

The Human Givens Institute commissioned its own survey of over 13,000 people, the Emotional Needs Audit, see www.hgi.org.uk/ena-results and successfully compiled the results. We already have the percentage figures for how well each innate emotional need is being met in the country and we know this is the determining factor for ‘well-being’. We already have a clear picture of how good people feel about life: When they get their innate emotional needs fairly well met in a balanced way they are happier. People only suffer serious distress or mental illness when something is preventing them from meeting one or more of their innate emotional needs.

Measurement may be seen as useful but all too often is a substitute for doing worthwhile work. “Gather more data” is often a stock excuse used by people in order to avoid taking meaningful action. Real knowledge about the human condition, and the practical skills needed to make a meaningful difference, are already available and taught through the Human Givens College.

Please act

We need your help now to lobby your local MP; the office of the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, London SW1A 2AA, and Jill Matheson at the office of the ONS at Room 1.101, Government Buildings, Cardiff Road, Newport, South Wales NP10 8XG – letters are better – to get them to incorporate the results of the ENA survey which already points the way to what needs to be done to improve wellbeing in this country. And don’t forget the print and broadcast media.

The human givens approach is ahead with the knowledge and ideas required, not only with measuring needs in a more useful and accurate way, but also in what to do with this information. Tell enough people about this and the whole country might benefit.

Best wishes
