If the Coalition’s research is to be more than a gimmick it should incorporate a human givens component at its heart. What was always assumed by governments over the last few decades is that raw data is somehow more important than understanding what data means.
The Human Givens Institute commissioned its own survey of over 13,000 people, the Emotional Needs Audit, see www.hgi.org.uk/ena-results and successfully compiled the results. We already have the percentage figures for how well each innate emotional need is being met in the country and we know this is the determining factor for ‘well-being’. We already have a clear picture of how good people feel about life: When they get their innate emotional needs fairly well met in a balanced way they are happier. People only suffer serious distress or mental illness when something is preventing them from meeting one or more of their innate emotional needs. Measurement may be seen as useful but all too often is a substitute for doing worthwhile work. “Gather more data” is often a stock excuse used by people in order to avoid taking meaningful action. Real knowledge about the human condition, and the practical skills needed to make a meaningful difference, are already available and taught through the Human Givens College.
The human givens approach is ahead with the knowledge and ideas required, not only with measuring needs in a more useful and accurate way, but also in what to do with this information. Tell enough people about this and the whole country might benefit.
Best wishes
