Human givens approach taking off in the Netherlands

It's great to hear from Renée van der Vloodt (right), and her colleague Jenny Wakelin, of the increasing interest in the human givens approach in the Netherlands.

As well as the workshops and seminars that they are running through Human Givens Nederland (which allows people there to take Part 1 of the HG Diploma in Holland and travel to the UK for their Part 2 – two are on currently on the Diploma in York), word of the effectiveness of HG is spreading, thanks to their work there.

A few years ago, Jenny was asked by the city of Apeldoorn to open a Drug Rehab Clinic, now called Tactus. Jenny's therapeutic work was very influenced by the HG approach and the great results she was getting didn't go unnoticed. Several projects have come out of this, including an amazing day they had recently at a very smart new Recovery Clinic in Holland.

They had been invited as a result of the success of Jenny's work to give three back-to-back talks about the human givens approach. "The clinic normally only use clinicians recognised and accredited in the Netherlands but thanks to Jenny’s amazing work at the Rehab centre in Apeldoorn they made an exception for us," says Renée.

"After the first talk, for which we only had a few tentative guests attend, word got round rapidly and by the end of the morning we had addressed 120 guests and sold out on our entire book stock! Luckily I was oblivious to the amount of psychiatrists, doctors and psychologists we had in the room and delighted to find that one of the psychologists got the go-ahead to do the HG Diploma!"

'Smiling Inside' – how an HG project helped previously underachieving children

Smiling Inside was developed in Milton Keynes by the Family & Education Support Team (including HG Dip graduates Kevin McDonagh and Lisa Lloyd) to help children who had been underachieving to raise their attainment, particularly in literacy.

As Kevin explains: "The HG-based project has been piloted with key stage 1 and 2 with successful outcomes and focuses on groups of 6–10 pupils and their parents in 6 weekly sessions. It helps parents explore the importance of meeting children’s emotional needs, and how to do this; it gives children opportunities to experience emotional needs being met; it introduces practical methods to support the development of literacy skills at home; it helps parents and pupils feel more confident about learning; and it helps children feel more positive about school and themselves as learners.

Each week a different emotional aspect that affects learning and development is explored and we introduce related key skills/experiences. This includes looking at feelings of safety around learning, followed by the teaching of paired reading; the role of positive attention, demonstrated through games to learn spelling patterns or key words; the importance of emotional connection demonstrated by each parent and child creating a story together; the role of being part of the wider community and finding out what is available through a range of visitors, before making books about different activities; the need for a sense of status and meaning in life and the creation of aspirations, explored through a visit to Milton Keynes College; and feelings of achievement experienced through a visit to MK News through which the pupils print their own newspaper front page."

The project has had fantastic feedback from both parents and children and the majority of pupils made 1–2 sub levels progress in reading, writing and/or speaking and listening in the term during which Smiling Inside took place. This was good progress for pupils who had previously been under-achieving.

A presentation about this project was made at a recent meeting of the HGI Education Section. And anyone interested can access a PDF of the the PowerPoint presentation here.

2010 HGI Conferenceeverybody welcome

We've had a great response already to this year's conference which is being held on 6th–7th November at beautiful Sunningdale Park. As ever it's going to be a great opportunity to network with other like-minded people as well as to learn from and be inspired by the conference speakers and other delegates.

The theme of this year's conference is Relationships—the human givens perspective and we are delighted that Dr Aric Sigman has agreed to be this year's Guest Speaker. His talk will be on: 'Relationships and the media'. Canadian diplomat John Bell will be sharing his extensive knowledge with us as he discusses the important role of the human givens in Middle-East negotiations and various other speakers will continue to explore the key theme from a number of different angles.

There are still some places left, so to book yours, or simply find out more, click here for a PDF copy of the Conference Leaflet and Booking Form. (Alternatively you can call the office on +44 (0)1323 811662 to book your place.)

The cost is £285.00 per delegate which includes attendance at both days with lunch, a Saturday evening dinner, tea/coffee at each break and conference materials. (There is accommodation available at Sunningdale Park which can be booked separately direct or via lastminute.com.)

HGI's Practice Reseach Network - UPDATE

We are very grateful to Bill Andrews who continues to work hard on gathering and promoting rigorous research into the effectiveness of the human givens approach. In preparation for the next HGI conference, he has just updated the research information on the HGI PRN's website, see: www.hgiprn.org and go to the bottom of the home page.

As Bill has explained in a recent posting on the HGI Members' Forum, he has submitted his paper on the Luton GP Practice Research Project to "a very high profile journal. It was not thrown out at the first hurdle, but is now undergoing considerable editing. It is a collaborative process with an International authorship. I hope to re-submit within a month and then we will have another 3 month wait (although last time it was 5 months). If this paper is finally sucessful I would then like to move on to write up the 3 years of data."

He also states that "We can therefore confidently say that around 77% of clients who enter treatment benefit significantly from treatment, typically in under 4 sessions." This is great news, and we heartily encourage all HG therapists to help Bill by submitting their data.
