Martin is a qualified counselling psychologist and social worker. Until November 2008 he managed the NOVA Trauma Support Service, which is part of the Barnardos organisation and has treated hundreds of psychologically traumatised people since 1998. He has now taken up the post of Highly Specialist Counselling Psychologist within Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, and continues to offer therapy through his own private practice, He has also contributed to several books and had articles published in various journals.
