Human Givens Conference
Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th June 2014
Sunningdale, Berkshire

Mental health in the digital age: is it possible?

The many wonders of digital technology are genuine enough but are they, like the Pied Piper of Hamlyn’s beautiful music, spiriting children away from reality?
Why is mental health not improving, despite the cost to the economy in England alone rising to over £105 billion per annum? (And government expecting treatment costs to double in the next 20 years.) Mental illness – rather than, say, a bad back or a broken arm – is now the number one reason for people claiming ‘sickness benefit’.
Is the compulsive use of social media addictive and, if so, does it need to be treated as such?
Online bullying drives some people to kill themselves and voyeurism, grooming by paedophiles and theft are increasing because of the internet. Can anything be done about this or do we get the type of society we deserve?
Is target obsession disorder (TOD) – made easier by data collection – stripping context out of policy-making in health care?
Does easy number crunching bias the direction scientific research takes?
What are the ‘lies, damned lies, and statistics’ that are affecting how psychiatry medicates children and adults?
How does caetextia (context blindness) virulently infect education, medicine, psychiatry, scientific research, policing and the media?
Is online psychotherapy better than no psychotherapy?
Evolution: will the digital world change our species?

Guest speaker:

Richard Bentall
Richard Bentall is Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Liverpool. His books include Madness Explained: Psychosis and Human Nature, which won the British Psychological Society Book Award in 2004 and, Doctoring the Mind: Why Psychiatric Treatments Fail – both best sellers. He is currently building a research group focusing on the psychological mechanisms of severe mental illness and social factors that affect these mechanisms. It is for this reason he is a speaker of interest to those employing the human givens approach.
