The Office for National Statistics thanks HGI members

When David Cameron asked for the nation’s ‘wellbeing’ to be measured, and gave £2 million to The Office for National Statistics (ONS) to do so, many HGI members got in touch with ONS to explain how the emotional needs audit (ENA) already does this. ENA clearly shows that mental health is determined by how well innate physical and emotional needs are matched up and met in the environment. The ONS analyst, Joanna Evans, telephoned HGI Director, Ivan Tyrrell, regarding this ‘National Debate’, saying they had received a lot of input from people about the human givens approach and had found it very helpful. Joanna wanted more information, which Ivan duly gave her. She also asked him to pass on her thanks to all those HGI members who had made submissions about the project and encouraged our continuing involvement.

Debates are being held around the country and the HG perspective is already looked on favourably. For example, Will Wakefield, CEO of YMCA Notts and HG graduate, is attending the first of these on Monday 21st February at 5:45pm – 7:30pm in the Charles Wilson Building on the University of Leicester's main campus. If you would like to hear Will speak in support of HG, you are very welcome to attend. To book a place, please contact Amy Costello, Web and Communications Officer, on 0116 252 2883, or email her at arj13@le.ac.uk.

New book: Human Givens Therapy with AdolescentsHuman Givens Therapy with Adolescents

Dr. Yvonne Yates, an Educational and Child Psychologist, has now published her book: Human Givens Therapy with Adolescents: A Practical Guide for Professionals.  It is based on her doctorate research inspired by the human givens approach (reported in our August 2010 newsletter). Part one contains a comprehensive background to the topic from the HG perspective and covers therapeutic structure and potential outcomes. Part two takes the form of a workbook comprised of assessment tools, detailed explorations of each innate emotional need, and practical interventions, all supported by photocopiable materials such as record sheets for the practitioner, and questions for the client. The book concludes with an informative case study taken from the author's research, which consists of a session-by-session therapeutic outline designed to communicate exactly how Human Givens works in practice.

Human Givens Therapy with Adolescents: A Practical Guide for Professionals is now available to buy from Amazon and Jessica Kingsley Publishers.

Raising further awareness of the HG approach in New Zealand

Following the success of his talk on the human givens at last year's Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Association's International conference, Dr Angelo Cacciato, a General Practitioner and HG Therapist based in Waikanae, New Zealand, was invited to give a presentation at the 2011 conference for the NZCCP (New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists) in Auckland on 19th – 20th March. As the first human givens therapist in New Zealand, Dr. Cacciato is heavily involved with teaching the approach to other doctors and therapists and we wish him every success with the conference.

One last thought...

“The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself; to be conquered by yourself is of all things most shameful and vile.”   Plato
