Good choices: Wing's triad of impairment 1— Social interaction: reluctance to involve themselves with others; socially inappropriate behaviour; one-sided interaction showing seeming unawareness of the needs of others in a social context; lack of ability to understand the intention of others; often display of self-stimulating and repetitive behaviour; lack concept of self and others 2 — Language and communication: difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, understanding meaning, and decoding facial expression and body language; inability to take turns; lack of meaningful eye contact 3— Rigidity in thought, behaviour and imagination: limited capacity for creative and imaginative thought; struggle to understand and express feelings and emotional responses; inability to read emotion in others; preoccupation with 'sameness' and difficulties in making change; inability to learn successfully from mistakes or trial and error; literal use of language (eg flummoxed by "it's raining cats and dogs"); inability to differentiate between fantasy and reality.
