About me

I qualified as a Human Needs Psychotherapist in 2006 and have been running a busy private practice in Manchester for almost 20 years now. I am a qualified Human Needs supervisor and enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience with trainees.

Like so many others, I find the powerful organising ideas of the Human Givens model of therapy is a robust tool in helping people understand and resolve the nature of their issues, providing them with lifelong skills to go on and lead productive, happy lives. This model of psychotherapy is effective, speedy empowering and enduring.

Historically: I originally trained as an Occupationally Therapist and spent 20 years working within the NHS, helping people who were involved in traumatic accidents or suffered physical illnesses. Understanding that some people can be traumatised by medical procedures or perhaps have physical issues with an emotional root. I saw first-hand how our emotional mind impacts our physical wellbeing and visa-versa. Our mental wellbeing and good physical health are co-dependent and energise each other.

As a psychotherapist I still work with the NHS one day a week, helping to reduce the NHS staff waiting list. We all know how hard working and dedicated our medical staff are and when they ask for help, it is an honour to supply it quickly and effectively.

As well as my private practice, I am a working practitioner with PTSD Resolution a leading veterans charity, who help veterans and their families to; resolve traumatic experiences, overcome relationship difficulties and find meaning, purpose and joy in their lives again.

I also work in a large prison in the North West, helping our veterans in custody who, because of chronic trauma, might be experiencing identity fragmentation which needs gentle de-traumatisation, psycho education, and the installation of self management tools, so that they can go on to celebrate their contribution to society and live healthy, productive lives again.

I have helped many Blue Light responders to resolve the impact of past traumas, freeing them up to continue with their chosen career, helping them become their best selves ever again. I also work for a ‘Return to Work’ organisation and several insurance companies with great success, helping people back to work no matter what issues they present with. I also see couples and help in relationship difficulties.

Therapy: I offer one to one therapy in the comfort of a domestic setting which people have said is more relaxing than a clinic. If preferred I can also see people online over zoom or skype.

A typical session: together we would look at; current difficulties and how these might be resolved; we might look at building better coping strategies; at strengthening emotional needs and what might be missing in the persons life, we would look at personal goals and find the best route for the person to achieve those goals; we could then practice these goals during gentle relaxation which re-energises the person both physically and mentally.

Testimonials

Beth, a ‘thank you’ just isn’t enough for what you have given me. After all of the traumas’ in my past, and all of the mistakes and bad choices I made after that, I knew I was only ‘getting by’, not really ‘living’ and I thought I would have to live like that for ever. You have given me the tools and the clarity to do what I want to do and be happy and peaceful as well. I can’t think of anything more worthwhile than our sessions together. I finally have control back in my life and I can choose the future I want. Thank you so, so much.

Traumatised lady from Manchester

“Hi Beth. Just thought I’d let you know that I’ve had my exams all week and that I didn’t get anxious or nervous at all before or after them. Thank you so much for the techniques you told me. I practiced them before hand and used them all, they were so helpful and I even managed to get a walk in between exams which did help to clear my mind.
Thank you so much for all your help, support, advice and techniques on what to do. They’ve helped so much and really stopped me from being anxious and nervous.”

I just wanted to say thank you for all you have done for me. In all my years, I’ve never found a person who has helped me understand myself the way you have. Your techniques are incredible and so, so clever. In just 3 sessions I feel I’ve made more progress than I have in years. You’re also a beautiful person with an amazing spirit and I wish I could continue seeing you every single month. It’s still a long journey for me but I never lose sight of the sunshine.

Depressed mother from Warrington

Thank you so much Beth. I was terrified of coming to see you. I don’t know why now because in our very first session you drew out that diagram and showed me exactly how basic training had changed me and I thought, it was the end of my world. But then, you drew out another diagram and showed me how we could work together to make some real positive changes and as we worked together I felt those changes happening. I sleep so much better now and my wife and I are getting closer too. Without your help I know I would not be here now. You gave me the bump start I needed. Thank you Beth.
