Taking on new supervisees

About me

Supervision, for me, is about creating a space where you can think freely about your work without feeling intimidated, judged or rushed. It’s somewhere to step back, reflect, and make sense of what’s happening with your clients as well as within yourself as a practitioner. We all know about the importance of ‘needs’ and supervision is a place where your needs as a therapist and the needs of your clients can be explored. Somewhere that you are totally comfortable to discuss and develop techniques and ideas. A place where ethical concerns or concerns for the way you work with a clients can be broached without fear. It is a place for support, learning and encouragement.

After nearly 20 years in practice and over 5 years as an HG Supervisor, I took a short period away from work. Returning to practice has given me a renewed respect for the fundamentals. Going back to basics wasn’t a setback—it strengthened my understanding of why the core principles matter so much. That perspective now underpins how I work with supervisees. My own supervisor was a massive help and encouragement to me, not only through my career as a therapist but also as I navigated my return to work. As a result of this, and my experience of other incredibly competent supervisors, I am deeply aware of the importance of compatibility, flexibility and understanding when it comes to choosing the right supervisor.

I tend to adapt supervision depending on where you are in your practice. If you are an experienced therapist, the work often becomes more exploratory—thinking together about more complex client dynamics, and gently stretching how we understand and respond to them. A sharing of minds and resources. If you are newer to the work, I offer more structure and guidance, helping you build confidence while keeping your practice safe, ethical, and grounded. For trainees, supervision becomes much more of a mentoring/tutoring role with a somewhat more structured approach.

What matters most to me is that supervision feels like a collaborative process rather than something directive. It should support you to develop your own thinking, your own style, and confidence in what you are doing.

Naturally, I am happy to have a free, initial and informal conversation with you so that you can get a sense of how I work and whether it feels like a good fit.

As well as my own private clients, I have worked for many years with Red Poppy, PTSD Resolution and more recently with Bigmoose.

Experienced HG Therapist

I have found Christine to be a supportive and grounded human being with lots of life experience, humour and wisdom to bring to HG Supervising. She knows her stuff and is generous in sharing her knowledge and expertise. She is very practical, direct and insightful in her approach to exploring ethical issues and challenging cases. I trust her to put her finger on areas that need wider consideration which inspires me to feel confidence in my practice and hers.
