Taking on new supervisees

About me

From my own experience, successful supervision is validating and fun as well as a safe place in which to be vulnerable, to learn, receive honest feedback, explore ideas and refine skills. That is what I hope to offer my supervisees too.

Supervision has played a pivotal part in the development of my 30 years of practice as a therapist and coach. It still holds up a mirror, keeps my curiosity alive and shows me where there is room for growth – for me as a person or in fine-tuning the application of the Human Givens ideas and practices.

Our work also sits within the wider context of an ever-expanding field – fed in part by exciting advances in scientific research in the field of wellbeing, as well as the alarming decline of our mental health and increased need for efficient and effective therapies. Supervision, therefore, can be the place to sharpen up our understanding of the principles that underpin our work, learn to use the HG organising ideas in assessing ‘new’ techniques and systems, or ask how research findings validate the paradigm that shapes our work. It is also the first port of call to consider ethical questions or dilemmas which may present themselves.

I taught the HG Diploma with Gail Rhodes when Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell first retired from teaching and taught most of the Part 1 curriculum in The Netherlands for 8 consecutive years. I still offer resilience training to junior doctors within the NHS but focus mainly on my private practice. As a supervisor, I work with registered therapists.

Testimonials

"I am benefitting enormously from my regular supervision sessions with Renée. She has an uncanny ability to intuit what the core issues are, especially with complex cases. Renée is very quick to distil and contextualise complex histories, symptoms and patterns of behaviour and to suggest hypotheses and potential treatment approaches. This makes for extremely stimulating discussions and a rich learning experience which keeps me on my toes!

During sessions Renée challenges me to consider problems from different perspectives and to find the answers for myself, whilst supporting me by generously sharing the knowledge and wisdom she has accrued through decades of experience. Although Human Givens’ principles form the backbone of Renée’s approach, she integrates a range of specialisms which include neurodiversity and treating complex trauma, together with expertise in mindfulness and self-compassion practices. As a result I leave every session equipped with a set of new insights. With Renée’s encouragement I think I can confidently say that I’m becoming a braver and more effective therapist."

Experienced HG therapist

“I chose to ask Renée to be my supervisor 3 years ago. I could see that she runs her private practice successfully, with clear messaging about who she served (neurodiversity specialism) and why. I’ve taken many of my most complicated client cases to be reviewed with her, and our supervision sessions have, without exception, been helpful and rich. I leave each time with screeds of notes so that I can re-reference the words or pointers she’s shared. Renée listens on multiple levels and responds with practical suggestions, and a wisdom about a client that could only have been gained through her own years of lived experience as a therapist. I would highly recommend Renée as a supervisor.”

Experienced HG therapist and supervisor

"I have worked with Renée as my supervisor for some years. She has an excellent ability to understand the issues I am dealing with when working with clients. I always learn a great deal from our supervision meetings and she directs me to explore useful and productive further directions. My therapy work is enriched by her support."
