HG features on popular podcast

Not Perfect Podcast Image

It was fantastic to see HG tutor and therapist, Dr Andrew Morrice, featured in the “Not Perfect Podcast” this month. Created and hosted by TV presenter and entrepreneur, Poppy Jamie, the podcast is one of the top 10 mental health podcasts in the UK – reaching tens of thousands of listeners every month.

As many of you will know, Andrew teaches our popular Mind-Body Connection one-day workshop – and in the podcast, he shares a wealth of insights, exploring the causes and treatment of depression, the importance of diet to our wellbeing, the need for medicine to take a more holistic and integrative approach and much more. He also explains why he chose to study the human givens approach and how he uses it in his practice as a GP.

Poppy, who is an important social media influencer, a wellness journalist and the founder of award-winning app, Happy Not Perfect, was delighted with the discussion. “I honestly think it’s one of the best frameworks to understanding our emotional needs as humans,” she says of the HG approach.

You can find out more and listen to the podcast here.

New issue of the HG Journal

It's always exciting when the latest issue of the Journal is delivered to the HG office – yet again it's packed full of useful and inspiring information. If you subscribe, your copy is on its way to you – otherwise you can order a copy, in print or digital PDF format, here.

Human Givens Journal Volume 28, no 1 Cover image

This issue features a particularly important article by Ezra Hewing who seeks to finally dispel the myth that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, showing that an understanding of REM sleep explains not only depression but why antidepressants may seem to help some people and harm others. HG co-founder, Ivan Tyrrell, reflects on the power of the imagination and Peter Welman argues for the HG organising framework to be extended to include the needs of the natural world too; there is an update from the HGI ethics committee and much more – view contents.

We were also delighted to see that Ezra Hewing – HG therapist and Head of Education at Suffolk Mind – had a letter published in The Guardian on Monday 14th June. Ezra was responding to the article, “Is sleep a ‘magic pill’ for teen wellness in a mental health crisis?”, which The Guardian had shared the week before in its Mental Health section. Sharing a key HG insight, Ezra points out in his letter that it is not just getting enough sleep, but getting the right quality of sleep, that matters, and he explains why “too much REM sleep is bad for us, as is too little.” You can find out more and read his letter here.

Once again, we would love to include your questions, so if you have something you would like to ask Joe, please send your question – by 5th July – to [email protected]

Also, if there’s a particular subject you’d like to see covered, or you’ve been impressed by an inspirational speaker in our field (from an HG background or otherwise) and feel others would be interested in hearing them, please do get in touch and let us know. Again, please email [email protected].

HG Diploma – Part 1 dates

Our intensive Part 1 workshop weeks are always popular – participants often find that completing all their Part 1 courses over 2 weeks (a week apart) enables them to immerse themselves in their training, focus on their studies, cut down on travel time and get to know fellow participants quickly.

Places in Bristol this Summer and in Leamington Spa in the Autumn are filling quickly – so if you are thinking of booking, we recommend you do so soon – for more details visit: www.humangivens.com/college/diploma/fast-track/  For anyone travelling from overseas who is unable to come this year, we intend to repeat this format next year.

If you have any questions at all about the Part 1 courses, or the HG Diploma in general, please contact Fiona Heffernan at the HG office via email [email protected] or on +44 (0)1323 811690. Our Diploma course is very popular, so if you’re thinking of
taking it, it’s always a good idea to let Fiona know of your intentions.
